Failover and Maintenance

What is Failover?

Failover in Software Engineering means regular operation of the system despite a malfunction (for example when main server is down due to malfunction, its tasks are taken over by backup server called also Failover server). Unlike Switchover (manual action required) Failover happens automatically and instantly (when the failure of main server is detected) and it's often not noticeable to the users of the system.

Why Failover is so important?

Malfunctions are happening even to high-quality computer equipment and well written software. IT Administrators can to a lot to reduce the possibility of failure but failure of single computer can still occur. Failover provides continuous availability and a high degree of reliability. It's essential for the companies that cannot afford any downtime due to system malfunction (which can be sometimes measured in days).

What CodeColony can do to provide Failover capability of our IT systems?

First of all we would need to examine current system and reliability requirements to start looking for solution. We have already designed a bunch of solutions that are working with our clients for Web Servers, Databases or Networks to provide failover. Of course each system needs individual approach so each solution is customized to the system needs. Also we are helping with improving existing system reliability together with instructing, how to make the maintenance of it easier.
